I have complicated feelings about the Fears, but I like to use their iconography or envoke their powers in my magical practice. I welcome any pop-culture pagans or the like who wish to use this page as a digital shrine of sorts. They are always so very hungry.
| Symbol | Names | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| The Buried Too Close I Cannot Breathe Choke |
The fear of entrapment, whether that be drowning, being buried alive, or trapped by debt. Often manifests as dirt, heavy rain or in underground spaces. |
| The Corruption Crawling Rot Filth |
The fear of contamination, decay and sickness. A deeply unpleasant fear that often manifests as disease or insects, but also often in unhealthy forms of love. |
| The Dark Forever Blind |
The fear of the dark, and what might lurk in the unseen. One of the oldest fears. Often manifests with darkness, brackish water and eclipses. Supposedly antithetical to Beholding. |
| The Desolation The Lightless Flame |
The fear of fire, of sudden loss and destruction. Fire and wax are the most obvious manifestations, but the Desolation is also the loss of potential, joy and comfort. It is not a coincidence that we see multiple references to landlords within this fear's domain. |
| The End Terminus |
The fear of death, of course. Mummies, games with the reaper, skulls, ominious black tendrils. The End is generally less proactive than the other fears; it wins either way – it's only a matter of time. |
| The Extinction | The fear of global catastrophies (particuarly of the man-made variety) and what happens after the anthropocene. The effects of climate anxiety are apparent in the existence of this fear, though it never had the chance to fully emerge in our timeline. |
| The Eye Ceaseless Watcher Beholding |
The fear of being watched, known and exposed. The fear that comes with knowing your curiosity might get you killed. Manifests with eyes, cameras, books and places of knowledge. My patron fear, for better or (mostly) worse. |
| The Flesh Viscera |
The fear of the slaughterhouse, of knowing that you are simply meat, nothing more. Whilst other fears are ascribed (correctly or not) soley to humans, this fear was explicitly born from the systematic killing and eating of theriform animals. |
| The Hunt Everchase |
The fear of prey, or becoming it. This fear is another one commonly associated with theriform animals, but not exculsively. The Hunt often manifests in persuit, followed by animalistic violence. It is also related to endless persuit of a goal that will never be reached and the abuse of the police force. |
| The Lonely | What it says on the tin. This fear is not typically associated with pain or violence, but that "gentleness" does not make it any less insidious. Manifests with the cold, fog, faceless crowds and homes you can never get fully comfortable in. |
| The Slaughter | The fear of random violence and of war rather that the instictual, generally purposeful Hunt. Often manifests with music, battlefeilds and weaponry. |
| The Spiral | Madness, lies and unreality are the domain of the spiral. It is a fear rooted in the distrust of one's own mind. Manifestations include distorted spaces, bodies and imagery. Fractals, mazes and patterns are likewise its domain. |
| The Stranger | This is broadly the fear of the other, but is commonly shown in the fear of the uncanny valley and the "not-quite-right" of it all. I feel that the Stranger affects me deeply in this life, as sometimes my physical body can feel somewhat uncanny to me. |
| The Vast | This is the fear of cosmic insignificance, wide open spaces and of course, heights. The vast often manifests in wide open skies, bottomless oceans and cosmically large beings. |
| The Web | This entity is two fold; it is the fear of manipulation and being controlled, and the more general fear of spiders. Manifestations include spiders and their webs and puppets on strings. The Web is also heavily tied to addiction. It manifests as the tape recorders that comprise "The Magnus Archives". |
